9 reasons parents of children who can’t wind down in the evening choose an Ella weighted blanket
Hi! I’m Ella. Job and I started Ella Sleeps because we weren’t sleeping well ourselves. And if there’s one message we hear time and time again, it’s this: my child just can’t wind down in the evening.
The story is almost always the same. The lights go out, and then it begins: tossing and turning, talking, legs that just keep moving, one more trip to the bathroom, one more call. An hour later, your child is still awake, and you’re lying in the hallway, waiting for things to go quiet.
Having trouble winding down is rarely deliberate. Usually, it’s a body still holding on to too much stimulation after a busy day. These are the nine reasons so many parents come to the same answer: a child-sized weighted blanket.
1. Bedtime is when all the day’s stimulation catches up with them
School, sports, screens, noise, playground drama: during the day, there’s always something demanding attention. Once the lights go out, those distractions disappear, and everything comes bubbling up.
That’s why restlessness shows up at bedtime. It’s not because your child doesn’t want to sleep, but because their body isn’t in rest mode yet.
2. Deep pressure does what a hug does, all night long
You know the feeling: a child who’s worked up and calms down as soon as you hold them close. That’s called deep pressure stimulation, and it’s exactly what a weighted blanket provides.
The weight is evenly distributed across the blanket, so your child feels constant, snug, comforting pressure. Calming, without you having to sit beside them.
3. Less tossing and turning means drifting off sooner
The more a child moves around, the longer they stay awake. The blanket reduces the urge to move, so children often lie noticeably stiller.
Parents tell us that the bedtime routine is getting shorter: fewer calls to come back, fewer trips up the stairs. It’s no miracle cure, but evenings are calmer.
4. Choosing the right weight is a matter of calculation, not guesswork
The rule of thumb: about 10% of your child’s body weight. Too light and your child won’t feel a thing; too heavy and it feels suffocating instead of calming.
That’s why we make two: 2.4 kg for children weighing 15 to 25 kg, and 3.2 kg for children weighing 25 to 40 kg. So you choose based on your child’s weight, not the size of the bed.
5. A print your child picks themselves works twice as well
It may sound silly, but it isn’t. A blanket your child has chosen themselves is their blanket, and they’ll take it to bed without a fuss.
Choose from Space, Polka Dots, Dino, Hippo, Unicorn, and soft Minky.
Prefer a plush toy to a blanket? He can choose his own Weighted Cuddle Toy too, such as Freddie, the Highland cow.
6. Filled with micro glass beads, so it’s thin and cool instead of warm and lumpy
The weight comes from fine glass beads, not thick filling. That keeps the blanket relatively thin and means it retains less heat than you might expect.
The pockets are double-stitched, so the filling stays in place and the weight remains evenly distributed, even after a year of intensive use.
7. Tested and certified, because it rests against your child’s skin
The fabric is OEKO-TEX certified and hypoallergenic. Every Ella product is tested for quality, and we’re even stricter with children’s products.
Does your child sleep hot too? Pair the blanket with a thin cotton cover and keep the bedroom at around 18 degrees.
8. Safe use is simple, but not optional
Three rules we give every parent: not for children under 3 years old, never heavier than about 10% of their body weight, and your child must be able to push the blanket off by themselves.
The blanket should never cover the head. If you’re unsure because of a medical condition, check with your GP or pediatrician first. We’d rather be upfront about that.
9. Try it for 30 nights at home, in your own bed
You won’t know how your child responds until they’ve had a few weeks of bedtime with it. That’s why we do things differently: 30 nights to try it at home.
If you don’t notice enough of a difference, we’ll pick up the blanket free of charge and refund your money. So feel free to sleep on it for a night. Or thirty.
"If your child has been sleeping poorly for months, or you’re worried about their restlessness during the day, stop by your GP or child health clinic too. A weighted blanket can help them settle down, but it isn’t a medical treatment. We’d rather be honest about that."
